South Bay is the more lively of Scarborough's two main beaches: golden sand, kiosks selling ice cream, arcades, amusements and beachfront cafes. Great for families wanting the full seaside experience - but expect more bustle, especially in peak times.

North Bay is a slightly quieter alternative: still excellent sand and sea views, with grassy hills behind and a more relaxed ambiance. Ideal if you'd like a break from the busiest promenade and want to unwind a bit more.

If you like scenic footpaths, you'll love the area, the town sits along the national trail Cleveland Way, which gives stunning sea-views over the North Sea and opportunities for walks towards neighbouring spots.

Tip: bring sturdy shoes if you plan to go up the cliffs or along uneven terrain.

This 12th-century castle dominates the headland between South and North Bays and offers dramatic views over the town and sea.

A unique, oriental-themed park with gardens, a boating lake and even mock naval battles in summer.

Great spot for a leisurely stroll, a picnic and some different scenery.

Rotunda Museum is a fascinating museum focused on geology and fossils, and is housed in one of the UK's earliest purpose-built museum buildings.

The Scarborough Open Air Theatre, a large outdoor venue used for concerts and events throughout the summer.

Stephen Joseph Theatre and The Spa have great shows available throughout the year, and multiple art galleries for a lot of great cultural experiences.

You'll find a great atmosphere in Scarborough Market Hall with fresh produce and independent stalls. Scarborough has a town centre with a variety of different shops.

If you have a bit more time, you might consider venturing out to the coast beyond Scarborough - for example:

• The historic village of Robin Hoods Bay, with its winding streets and seaside charm.
• Whitby is a great town to visit for the day up the coast with its abbey and classic coastal town atmosphere.
• Dalby Forest has great mountain biking and walking trails throughout the forest, and activities throughout the year.
• Coastal walking along the cliffs or joining a longer stretch of the Cleveland Way.
• Head inland to explore beautiful villiages and towns on the 128 bus route, including Thornton le Dale and Helmsley, which is also the start of the Cleveland Way and has a lovely walk to Rievaulx Abbey
• Visit York for the day on a return train or by Coastliner bus to explore the incredible historic city.
